Racing and Ride Updates
Road Events:
Mountains of Misery was held on May 24th in Newport VA just outside of Blacksburg and offered over 400 riders the opportunity to challenge themselves over the regions most beautiful and difficult roads. Congratulations to all the members of the BRBC and other riders in the valley who completed this amazing ride. There where several members of the East Coasters / BRBC Racing Team who completed this challenge century with great finish times; Rick Woods at 5:37, Gary Roach at 5:40, Bernie Sanders 6:04 and Wes Best 7:23.
3 Mountain Metric Madness was held 6 days later down in North Carolina. This is a classic challenge ride showcasing the rolling countryside just north of Winston-Salem, NC, punctuated by three hard climbs up Sauratown, Hanging Rock and Pilot Mountains. Many BRBC members participated in this well run event and proudly had EC/BRBC Race Team member Rick Woods take the honors of first finisher in a blistering time of 4:39
Mountain Bike Events:
Memorial Day weekend offered riders plenty event options between Mountains of Misery, Mountain Bike Festival in Stokesville, VA and the 24 Hours of Burn in North Carolina. Two members of the EC/BRBC Race Team decided to participate in the insanely fun 24 Hours of Burn. Congratulations to Dave Tompkins and Skip Huffman who both raced in the 3-5 Person Coed category. Dave’s team placed 4th and Skip’s Team placed 9th.
On May 31st, Danville, VA was host to the Shootout on Anglers Ridge. This is a classic piedmont style mountain bike course that features relentless short climbs and tight, twisty trails. An early morning thunderstorm brought heavy rain that made conditions extra challenging. Congratulations to our Junior Team member Justin Plymale as he entered his first race and placed 2nd in the 18 and under class! Our Adult Racing Team also represented well with the following results; Robert Drinkwater 1st place 50+ Sport Men, Dave Tompkins 4th place in Single Speed. Unfortunately, Todd Fisher and Kristin Colonna both suffered mechanical issues that prevented their finish.
This past weekend Massanutten Ski Resort hosted the 4th Race in the US Cup National Mountain Bike Series. Local trail volunteers had dedicated over 1800 hours of work to construct some amazing new trails on the western slopes of Massanutten. The course was spectacularly fun and technical with most riders raving over their experience. EC/BRBC had a terrific turn out and congratulations to all! Official results have not been posted for the race as of this writing so here is my best shot… Justin Plymale 1st place 18 & Under (Go Junior Team!!), Beth von Isenburg 1st place 30+ Women, Wake Fulp top 20 XXC, Gary Roach top 20 XXC, Robert Drinkwater 2nd place 50+ Men, Ian Coffey 7th place Single Speed and Kristin Colonna 5th place Sport Women.

This includes: -Read the ride description and be familiar with the basics of the route -Be able to ride at the posted average pace -Communicate any issues you may have in regards to the route, or needing to cut off early, etc. prior to the ride -Bring proper tools to take care of common on the ride issues (pump, spare tube, tire levers, etc) -Point out road hazards to your fellow riders whether through hand signals or voice communication -Follow traffic laws in a safe manner: —Ride no more than double file and move into single file when there’s traffic behind —Yield to traffic behind —Don't run stoplights and stop signs —Don't ride the wrong way down one way streets “RIDE VEHICULARLY”
