Valley Area Shared Trails Network

Mission Statement

To promote sustainable trails for all

non-motorized trail users in the Roanoke Valley.

What is VAST?

The Valley Area Shared Trails (VAST) Network is a group of citizens from the Roanoke Valley area which represent the trail users of the Roanoke Valley for non-motorized trail uses.  First spear headed by Ian Webb and Wes Best in 2001, their vision was to have all the area trail users meet and work together on area projects that would benefit the community.

Today, VAST is comprised of representatives from the Appalachian Trail Club, Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, Roanoke Valley Horsemen's Association, Roanoke Valley Greenways/Pathfinders, National Mountain Bike Patrol and IMBA.  VAST membership is open to all organizations that use trails who wish to have an active role in working to keep them open and maintained.

Currently, VAST is working on trail projects such as maintaining & building Mill Mountain Trails, maintaining & building Carvins Cove trails, signs and bridges, and seeking approval of the Big Loop between Roanoke and Explore Park.  VAST acts as a “clearing house” and information hub to promote each of the organizations for such trail projects so the community can be informed and get involved.
